Sun-Woo is the manager of sleek modern restaurant in uptown Seoul called La Dolce Vita, but that's not his only employment. He is also the errand-boy of underworld Kingpin Mr Kang. A job he fulfils ruthlessly and efficiently, until the day Mr Kang takes off for a week, leaving Sun-Woo to mind his much younger girlfriend Hee-Soo to make sure she doesn't sleep around. If she does, he is to execute both of them. Hee-Soo cheats. Sun-Woo almost sentences them to death, but has a sober moment and realises that letting them go is the right thing to do.In Mr Kang's absence a rival crime syndicate, headed by President Baek and his over-confident son is becoming more and more impatient to force a business merger with Kang. The set-up and story are so simple and honest that you can literally start-watching the film at any point and still become immersed in the action. But, I feel that many viewers may be missing the twist at the end.By 'twist' I mean after Sun-Woo's death the film goes back to the beginning, revealing that he only fantasised the whole thing. He says the cruelty of any sweet dream is waking up to find yourself back in the real world. He is still in his restaurant and when no one is looking, insecurely looking over his shoulder to make sure, Sun-Woo shadow boxes for fun or curiosity. Hardly the kind of behavior you would expect from a man who has just annihilated 50 baddies.But, regardless of the final outcome, it's the high-octane journey you take to get there that really matters right? And A Bittersweet Life is one movie you'll want to watch over and over again.

I have greatly enjoyed many of Satoshi Kon's works over the years. Tokyo Godfathers was a delight to watch, easily the best Christmas movie I have ever seen. Millennium Actress was an amazing story that covered the life of a famous, yet tragic actress. The only other movie that I can compare it to for so expertly showing the life story of a great individual would be Citizen Kane.
But out of all of Satoshi Kon's movies, I hold a special place for Perfect Blue. Perfect Blue was actually the first anime DVD I ever bought. I had just started watching anime, and it was through pure luck that the movie caught my attention on the shelf. Seeing it compared to Alfred Hitchcock, another director I have enjoyed, I decided to give it a shot. I was blown away by Perfect Blue, I had never seen anything like it before in my life. The story of the young actress Mima and how she gradually loses her grip on reality was a masterful mind game. There came a point where I didn't know what was the reality, and what was illusion. With all the mind games, plot twists, and the surreal story, I was expecting one of those weird endings that confound new anime viewers( yes Eva, I'm talking about you). Yet the ending actually made sense, with the all various plot threads tied together in a way that was understandable. Even parts that I thought at first were thrown in gratuitously were all important pieces of the plot or the psychology of the characters.
In short, many of my favourite artists not only subvert what people expect from the form they work in, but subvert what people come to expect from them as well. Mind you, this runs the risk of alienating their audiences, as Neil Young and Lou Reed could tell you. Satoshi Kon managed to not only do something different with Tokyo Godfathers, but still made a movie that sits comfortably with all of his other ones (never thought I'd use a word like "comfortably" while describing Kon's work, but life is funny that way sometimes). Here's hoping that Madhouse will manage to keep as much of his spirit in Yume-Miru Kikai as possible, since I'm looking forward to seeing how he managed to make his style work for a movie intended for children.
The movie starts off in a pretty lackluster manner. You cannot imagine when you start the movie that you're in for something spectacular. It is a black & white movie, but that is by no means a turnoff. It's appeal is not flashy special effects, a great soundtrack OR Arnold Schwarzenegger (he's not in it). The movie carries itself solely by dialogue and dialogue alone. A lot of it are very explicit and not for the faint of heart, but the comedy is undeniable and the irony with which the average life of a clerk is portrayed in this movie is really one for the record books.
The language in Clerks is certainly provocative, but it only adds to the overall humor, and does not feel like it has been added on for no reason(like, for example, a Quentin Tarantino flick). Being an old movie, Clerks maybe a bit harder to located amongst our DVD stores, but it is worth the search. It is even worth a download, because Clerks is a timeless and under-appreciated movie that can be enjoyed with friends or if you're just chilling like a villain on penicillin.
The same cast in Clerks is back, of course. But this time, there is a change in scenery, as the Quick Stop burns down, and the two clerks Dante and Randall are forced to work someplace else. There isn't a change in pace, however, as director Kevin Smith takes it upon himself to make sure that you laugh from the beginning of the movie right to the bittersweet end of it. 2ff7e9595c
